Corporate wellness doesn't work

Corporate wellness programs have the vibe of a special guest speaker on the annual school day. You hear a lot of sound, motivation and fury but absorb nothing.

I am yet to encounter a corporate wellness program that did anything other than get people to run or cycle once in a while. They throw in the occasional zoom call or live talk where people get very excited. But I am yet to see a study or actual organisation that has come out and said ‘those coaches we hired set the organisation on fire. A good chunk of our employees and department were raring to exercise everyday and make better food choices. ‘

If this has happened in a Singapore, Finland or elsewhere, I would love to hear and learn about the details. I cannot comment on the mental wellness part of wellness programs since it is not something I understand.

Corporates truly treat their employees like children when it comes to encouraging them to be more active. At their best, they are a mildly amusing way to get people to flail around aimlessly for an hour. At their worst, it’s attending a zoom call with your cameras off and browsing through social media while someone yaps away about avoiding sugar etc etc.

And it is safe to say that the more things a corporate wellness program claims to do, almost nothing will get done with any degree of effectiveness.

The only people patting themselves on the back for corporate wellness programs are HR folks. I am yet to meet a coach who was happy with how it turned out. And have never met a single client who could consistently apply what they learnt from a one-off or once a week meet.
