My name is Adarsh and I’ve been taking Marine Collagen Peptides for a month now.
The evidence for it is not overwhelming.
We don’t have as much conclusive evidence as we do for quality sleep, 1.6 grams of protein/kg of bodyweight and strength training with quality conditioning of different intensities thrown in.
So my conviction that protein is a game changer is strong. My conviction to train is just as strong. And that I need to sleep 7-8 hours is non-negotiable.
But I take the Type 1 collagen with vitamin C primarily because I can afford it and if it can help a little, why not use the extra hand. Even if the hand isn’t as strong or useful as all the other things I can do.
So the takeaway and dilemma is this:
Be clear on the quality and magnitude of evidence. Your conviction needs to be high. And you should prioritise nailing these down. They are necessary. Not just nice to have. So you should accord them the time, money and attention they have earned and deserve.
When quality and evidence are iffy, affordability is the primary consideration. Collagen is nice to have but not necessary. And if you don’t nail down sleep, training, protein and healthy fats, the collagen is practically useless. Don’t overspend on it. And definitely don’t cut back on the necessities to accommodate it. Nice to have can never replace necessary.
