The gym ran without me

8 April 2026

I've not been moving around much or training at all for the last 10 days. A small price to pay to ensure I heal up well after an accident.

But the ten days not moving means:

  1. I've not coached at the gym for eight days. That's 24 live coaching hours I've not done. My longest break since December 2016. And you know what? The gym is doing just fine. Whatever pain I feel from not being able to coach is far outweighed by the sheer joy that the gym is running so damn smoothly! The team is just so good. And that makes me proud. Very proud. Whatever the cons of decentralized, loose management, the team feeling lost is not one of them.

  2. I've not done my usual set of moves for 10 days. I have gone longer without training. But teeshirts fit different. And I've not trained either. The initial period of gloom over what will happen to my skills and numbers has been supplanted with let's work on some new stuff. And the old stuff will come back with time too. I picked up a calf raise machine in preparation for what comes next. I have a TA trainer ready to go. So it should be interesting times! I will be stronger a year from now than I am today. That's not a motivational speech or pep talk. It's just the trend and I will keep it going.

  3. So much of what I do is on hold: the running around for gym stuff, maintenance stuff, equipment, lathe visits, agonizing over milling or iterating. And you know what? I think after 11 years of stuff, the foundation is strong enough that a lot of it was not necessary. It was me working out of habit in a certain time-inefficient manner. I would make a 30-40 minute trip when a 5 minute call and a couple of videos would have sufficed. But now I am constrained and forced to find a way to make things happen, it's happening just fine. I've always been a recalcitrant ba***rd. It takes weird, extreme things to change my habits and work routine. It took COVID for me to figure out online. I made some really ugly landmines, dumbbells and sleds before I figured out how to visualize equipment better. Long story short, for me to shake up my habits something dramatic and external has to sock me right at my core.

  4. I am so much calmer and happier when I don't step out. I haven't driven on our roads. I've not left my home. I've not read much about politics. I am privileged enough to work from home. And you know what? I feel like I don't need to rant as much. Which brings me to my big point: giving a shit about this place and letting it get to you is optional. Just always have enough money and options to find a new one when the nightmare of living here inevitably knocks on your door.

  5. Catch up on things I've neglected. Our admin pile was a mess. No one's fault. But when coaches are forced to manage, things will get messy. I cleaned up our CRM, finished my application for a clinical anatomy program and will read more. More family time!
