Here is a ‘bad’ habit that has snuck into my training.
I didn’t have my usual training environment for a week. But there were dumbbells and a couple of ropes.
Leading into this week, I was having a terrific streak with loaded squats (ladder), one arm push ups with a 6 inch riser for more range, chin ups and deadlifts.
Those were my main moves.
And all of them used ‘proprietary’ equipment or specific setup.
So when I travelled, the rational me would have adapted to rope pull ups, reverse lunges or split squats using dumbbells, pistol squats and overhead press or lateral raises.
But instead I did nothing. In my head I anchored to my routine and progress leading into the week without gear. And when I didn’t have my usual setup or training environment, rather than improvise I dropped it all.
Part of me rationalises that I was stressed and tired. So I chose to rest. Time was available. But the will to adapt to a different training environment was lacking.
And I noticed the same thing happened a few weeks ago too.
There’s a pattern here. Falling in love with a specific plan or pattern. Needing a very specific environment to move. To a counterproductive degree. And not being flexible enough to get some work in. Saying things like ‘I can’t train if I don’t have x, y and z’. Or ‘I’ve made progress with x move and don’t want to mix it up.’
It’s quite a silly and basic trap. This is exactly what I warn clients against. And I walked into the same trap.
Time to shake things up a bit.
