The VC who wanted scale

In 2014, the number one question about my service was : ‘what do you do for a living after coaching?’. I would awkwardly explain that I am all in on the coaching racket.

Aided by a few early believers, we wrangled up an advance to build a skeletal gym with a few kettlebells and pull up bars. And we pulled in enough revenue to cover rent. And enough for a decent meal. It helped that my ‘startup’ was incubated in my parents’ apartment. There was the most clumsy VC call in 2016 to explain how I wanted to build one great gym and a useful nutrition portal (they reached out). They were baffled by the staggering lack of ambition or desire for scale.

My desire now as it was in 2009 is to build a gym I would love to train in myself. This involves building tools that don’t exist in the market.

The ambition has scaled to being a coach that could have helped 2009 Adarsh get stronger more efficiently while enjoying training. And of course, the primary goal remains can we remain an effective service and space that people look forward to training in even after years of training.

The business of running a coaching-centric gym is straightforward.

Always strive to run a facility you personally enjoy training in.

Always ask yourself: is this the best way for my client to be spending time in my facility?

Don’t become enamoured enough with exercises, tools or programming choices that you are indiscriminate in your use of a few.

Ensure people truly value and enjoy what you do.

And it helps to be curious enough to ask can this exercise be done more effectively by tweaking the cues, tools or intent.

And I will never forget how lucky I am to be able to make a living doing something I think is a productive and enjoyable way to spend my time personally.
