As a coach, I control how a client moves at the gym for 3-4 hours a week. Additionally, I can expect a client to walk 15-20 mins a day.
With someone really motivated, I might give them some goals like hanging off a bar, doing some banded hip work and hope they get that done everyday.
But what I don’t control is the positions they spend 7-8 hours in. This for most of humanity is how they sit and how they sleep.
Until now. I took a stab at a chair.
For some people the solution to sitting is a standing desk. But let’s face it, lots of people don’t feel terribly productive in the standing position. After a while the standing position can be rough on the back and knees.
So here’s my potential solution. I designed and built a ‘chair’ that distributes weight more evenly between your hips and legs.
Regular chairs load the hips too much. Standing loads the legs too much.
Why not put more weight on the legs with a normal chair?
Because of the seat angle. On most chairs the seat runs parallel to the floor. This position loads the hips and only hips.
On the wall-sit chair the seat rest is sloped to provide support for the hips without putting all your weight on the hips. The length of the rest also distributes weight more evenly along the hips and legs. The legs take their share of the load. The resting angle of the hips is more extended. This means the muscles around the hips are more relaxed than when you sit on a conventional chair.
The wall sit chair approximates a resting position that lets you focus on work or study without needing a place to rest your arms.
Like with any new position, your legs will remind you they are bearing load. But as you get used to it, the legs adapt to the position and get stronger.
I’ve shipped out two pieces and can’t wait to hear back! I can’t wait to see where this goes.
As always made in Madras.
