Tier lists lie

Tier lists, rankings, scores, GOAT debates. Most of it exists to farm attention. Reviewers need the fight. Trolls need the fight. You don't.

But the people defending rankings have a point. The differences are real. An iPhone is not a Samsung. A VW Tiguan is not a VW Taigun. The question is what those differences are worth, and to whom.

A 2,000 buck dip stand does the same thing as my 16,000 buck one. Dips are dips. Same muscles, same result. Do them often enough on either and you get equally good at them. But blind test me on both and I'll tell you which is which every time. The knurling, the width adjustment, the height, the slope. The difference is real and I can feel it.

Same with phones. Give me a task on an iPhone and on an Android and I'll finish faster on the iPhone. Not because it's a better phone. Because I've used one for years and the workflow is in my hands. Copy-paste across devices. Open Notes and pick up a half-written program or rant where I left off. That's what the premium buys me.

So the differences are real. What the tier list gets wrong is pretending they matter to everyone equally.

The 2,000 buck stand is genuinely enough for someone who just wants to get dips done. The 16,000 one is me obsessing over something. Neither is the better dip stand. The ranking pretends there's an answer that holds for both of us. Nolan will tell you 70mm film is a big deal while 99.9 percent of people watch The Odyssey on an iPhone.

The actual equation is two questions. Can you afford it? Is it worth it to you? That's it. Gym equipment, cars, protein, memberships, clothing, phones, laptops, shoes, cycles, razors, toothbrushes.

Have your opinion. You might think someone buying an expensive iPhone is making a silly choice. Just be self-aware enough to know you've spent time, money or attention on something that looks equally stupid from where they're standing.

People will balk at 100 bucks for a carton of ultrafiltered milk and then drop 500 on a plate of paneer tikka without blinking. Nobody is consistent about this.

I'm no better at any of this. I'll tell you Djokovic has the best stats and then spend an hour watching Federer backhand clips on YouTube and buying Uniqlo. Not defensible. I do it anyway.

Ask me if I really needed to spend 16k and hours of work building an adjustable width sloped dip stand and the answer is yes. I enjoy dips. I see the value in a better one.

Consumption is personal. So is how you spend your time and attention. If you insist on telling people their choices are stupid, be ready to answer the same question about yours.
