I can ask my client to walk more or bump up their casual activity levels or increase their step count. But they can't do it in the absence of footpaths, large parks or when the roads are hazardous. You really don't look forward to going out.
I can ask my clients to work on improving their conditioning levels with light jogs, hiking or strenuous walks. But they can't do it when there are no safe running tracks, poor traffic sense or the air is so polluted that the risk of strenuous activity far outweighs the reward.
I can ask my client to set a good example for their kids by spending more time outdoors being active with their family. But if the parks have shoddy equipment, rusty bars or are just crowded, they really can't do any of that, can they?
I can ask my clients to eat better, be more mindful or eat more protein. But this can't happen unless the broader public demands these foods and menu cards begin to change. Or the regulatory bodies do their job in ensuring what you see in the ingredients is what you are getting sans toxins, pests or adulteration. Let's not get started with friends or family normalizing indulgence and making you feel terrible about being mindful.
We can try to divorce ourselves from where we live by paying a premium. But the friction will always remain very real.
