Why our gym is never open unsupervised

I’ve had 5 bags of whey protein destroyed by the logistics folks who are just hideous in their handling.

The logistics spaces are cramped. They barely have room to store things carefully. And they are ill-equipped. There are no lifts or scissor platforms or ramps to carefully move a bike onto a truck. They’re lifted on by two guys and it’s a mess.

There’s an irreverence and indifference to property and its handling that is terrifying and baffling.

I know people are ready for street fights and calling police officers they know at the lightest of slights, scratches or dents to personal property.

So people do care about their stuff. It’s just other people’s things they don’t care about.

One reason I will never ‘open’ up my gym for others to use on their terms: people trash things and treat it terribly. I’ve seen it post-Covid. A couple of spaces allowed ‘outside’ coaches to use their space in an effort to support the industry. And the coaches destroyed barbells, left plates strewn about and were a menace.

Our business model that allows use of our space only when one of our coaches is around is due to my conviction that we can’t trust anyone to use the space or equipment without trashing it.

I’ve seen this with valets driving cars. Parents nudging kids to be rough with park equipment. Government employees trashing office equipment and garbage bins.

Respect exists only for what we own. Everything else can be pissed upon or manhandled. But even here, the number of poorly maintained automobiles and gyms suggests we only care so much even if it is stuff we own.
