Why the new trap bar feels better

“I managed a deadlift PR that is 20 kgs heavier than my earlier effort.”

This was a comment from a client who is in week 4 of training. She managed a 110 kg deadlift.

We cued her minimally to push the floor away. And we’ve just plugged away at a single leg squat. Nothing revolutionary. The deadlift hasn’t gotten as much love in the current training block.

And this has been a consistent bit of feedback from clients using our new trap bar. The lift feels ‘better’. They feel more confident to lift more.

There are a few things we’ve done with this bar that lend, in my opinion, to a more confident lift:

We’ve nailed down the distance between handles. 22.5 inches is the sweet spot. Arms not too far apart nor too cramped. Simpler to engage the upper back through the entire lift.

The balance is immaculate. We spent hours getting this right. Open back trap bars lack one side. Ordinarily, this would make them lopsided. But we got the weight balance spot on making for a balanced bar. The weight sleeve is also centered perfectly ensuring a lift that never feels lopsided.

The handles are 30 mm in diameter. And the length is just right to ensure finding the middle is intuitively easy.

It took us years to get these details right. But watching it come together and enable a confident, satisfying lifting experience is heartening.
