Wishful thinking in a bottle

No injection. No shortcut. Says the company selling you a capsule.

Take a recent ad for berberine.

Read the hero line: "a more healthy levels sensitivity." It doesn't mean anything. If you can’t get a basic headline right, how can you be trusted to get the supplement right?

Then there are the before-and-after hoops. September looks pregnant. November has a flat stomach and a flower. Three months, one capsule a day. That's the promise. The fine print walks it back: individual results may vary, health supplement, not a medicine.

Here's what berberine actually does. It helps a little with blood sugar regulation and cholesterol. Some studies show a kilo or two of weight loss over months. That's it.

It can help if you nail down the basics. Better food selection, calorie awareness, portion control or measured intake.

Those are big things to nail down. And you still need to build lean mass with smart activity choices.

Berberine won't meaningfully suppress your appetite. It cannot build lean mass. It cannot cancel out surplus food intake.

On blood sugar meds? Berberine interacts with metformin and several other drugs. Talk to your doctor before you stack it.

It plays a small, optional role in better body composition. A rounding error.

Without the basics, berberine is wishful thinking in a bottle.
